Steering parts for classic Renault — R4, R5, R12, R16 and Fuego

Classic Renaults have a dedicated and growing restoration community across Europe. From the Renault 4 — the best-selling French car ever produced — to the cult-status R5 Turbo and the stylish Fuego coupé, these cars are actively driven, restored and maintained. Tomaxclassics stocks steering parts for a growing range of classic Renault models, including complete steering racks, tie rods, steering bellows and ball joints, from suppliers with OEM-equivalent quality.

🔧 Steering wear on classic Renaults — what to look for

Steering components on classic Renaults wear in predictable ways. Steering rack bellows (soufflets) crack and split with age, letting in dirt and moisture that accelerate wear on the rack itself. Inner and outer tie rod ends develop play, causing imprecise steering and uneven tyre wear. A complete steering rack replacement is often the right solution when the rack itself is worn — sourcing a quality replacement is the main challenge on these models, and that's where Tomaxclassics comes in.

Models and steering systems

Renault 4 / 4L (1961–1993)

The Renault 4 uses a unique steering system that differs from most contemporaries: a central rack-and-pinion unit connected to two steering rods via a steering block (French: boîtier de direction). This arrangement is specific to the R4 and not interchangeable with other models. The entire steering linkage is a known wear area, and sourcing quality replacement parts is increasingly difficult as mainstream suppliers drop coverage for this model.

• Steering rack (tandheugel) — complete unit for R4 from 1961 onwards

• Steering bellows / soufflets — most commonly replaced item on the R4

• Steering rod block (stuurstangblok) — specific to the R4 geometry

• Ball joints and steering rod ends

• Note: R4 steering geometry is unique — always verify your production year before ordering

Renault 5 (1972–1984) and Super 5 (1984–1996)

The Renault 5 uses a conventional rack-and-pinion steering system. The R5 Alpine Turbo and R5 Turbo 2 have brought cult status to the entire R5 family, lifting interest and prices across all variants. Steering bellows are the most commonly replaced part; inner tie rods follow as the rack wears.

• Steering rack — complete unit for R5 from 1972

• Steering rack bellows — left and right, most common replacement

• Inner and outer tie rods (spoorstangen binnen/buiten)

• R5 Turbo / Alpine Turbo: confirm steering spec — may differ from standard R5

Renault 12 (1969–1980)

The Renault 12 uses a recirculating ball steering box on early variants, transitioning to rack-and-pinion on later production. The R12 was hugely popular in the Benelux and is a common restoration project — many examples that were exported to Morocco and Turkey are now returning as restoration subjects. Steering parts availability through mainstream channels is very limited.

• Steering box or steering rack depending on production year

• Tie rods and ball joints

• Confirm your production year and variant before ordering

Renault 16 (1965–1980)

The Renault 16 was a technically progressive car for its time, with optional power steering on TL and TS variants. The R16 has a loyal ownership community across Europe — and steering components are among the hardest parts to source. We are building coverage for the R16 steering system, including power steering hoses and pump on assisted variants.

• Steering rack or box (depending on variant)

• Power steering hoses and pump — TL/TS variants

• Tie rods and steering column joints

Renault Fuego (1980–1986)

The Fuego is a stylish front-wheel-drive coupé with rack-and-pinion steering. It has an active owners' community and parts scarcity is a known issue. Fuego owners are prepared to pay for quality parts from a reliable supplier — Tomaxclassics is building its Fuego steering range to serve this audience.

• Steering rack — complete unit

• Steering rack bellows

• Inner and outer tie rods

• Steering column universal joints

🔧 Complete steering rack or parts — which do you need?

If your steering bellows are split but the rack shows no play, replacing the bellows alone is sufficient. If you feel vagueness or play in the steering that isn't cured by tie rod replacement, the rack itself may need replacement. Contact us with your model, year and symptoms and we'll help you identify the right parts before you order.
