CV boots and drive shafts for your classic car

The CV boot — also called a gaiter or drive shaft boot — is the rubber or TPE protective cover around the constant velocity joint on the drive shaft. It keeps grease in the joint and keeps dirt, water and grit out. A split CV boot is one of the most common drivetrain problems on classic cars that have been stored for years: rubber hardens and cracks after long periods of inactivity or cold exposure.

When to replace just the boot, and when to replace the whole shaft?

If the boot has only just split and the joint is still smooth and quiet — no clicking in turns, no vibration under acceleration — a CV boot kit is sufficient. The kit contains a new boot, CV grease, clamps and a circlip. If the joint has already run dry through grease lost via the split, or if the joint is already clicking, replacing the joint or complete drive shaft is the better choice.

Rubber or TPE: always match the original material

CV boots are available in rubber (NBR or neoprene) and TPE (thermoplastic elastomer). TPE is more heat-resistant and is used on modern drive shafts with higher torque loads. GKN Automotive — the leading OEM supplier for CV boots — recommends matching the original material: replace rubber with rubber, TPE with TPE. The wrong material leads to premature cracking from heat or brittleness.

What a CV boot kit contains:

• Boot (rubber or TPE, inner or outer joint)

• CV grease (molybdenum disulphide grease, correct volume for the joint)

• Large and small clamp (Oetiker clip or band clamp)

• Circlip or retaining ring

• Sometimes: hub nut

We supply CV boots and drive shafts from GKN (OEM supplier), Febi Bilstein and Meyle for all popular classic car makes.
