Brake drums for your classic Rover
All classic Rover models — from the compact 25 to the elegant 75 — are fitted with drum brakes on the rear axle. A brake drum works together with brake shoes, a wheel cylinder and the handbrake cable to bring the car to a stop at the rear. Rust or wear: the two reasons to replace brake drums on a classic
On classic Rovers, there are two situations that call for new brake drums. The most common is internal rust, particularly on cars that have been stored for extended periods or kept outdoors. Rust on the inner surface of the drum affects the contact area with the brake shoe and reduces braking performance. The second reason is wear: grooves worn into the drum surface by the brake shoes reduce braking efficiency and will fail an MOT inspection.
Always replace together: drum and brake shoes
Fitting a new brake drum to worn brake shoes — or vice versa — is not a good combination. The wear profiles do not match, leading to vibration, uneven braking and accelerated wear of the new part. Always replace brake drum and brake shoes per axle (left and right at the same time) for safe and balanced braking.
Rover 200 and 400: Honda Concerto platform
The Rover 200 (R8, 1989–1995) and Rover 400 (R8, 1990–1995) are technically based on the Honda Concerto platform, developed in partnership with Honda. This means that brake drums for the Rover 200 and 400 are in many cases interchangeable with those for the Honda Concerto (1989–1994) — significantly increasing the availability of suitable aftermarket parts.
