Air filter for your classic Ford
From the Ford Cortina to the Sierra, from the Capri to the Escort RS: classic Fords are still driven and maintained with passion. The air filter is one of the most straightforward service items — but it needs to match your specific engine and carburettor configuration.
Carburettor era: Cortina, Capri, Escort, Sierra
Most classic Fords up to the mid-eighties run on a carburettor — Weber, Solex or Ford's own Motorcraft unit. The air filter sits in a round filter housing on top of the carburettor and uses a ring-shaped filter element. Popular sizes for the OHC four-cylinder (1.3, 1.6, 2.0 Kent/Pinto) are well stocked by K&N (KN E-1080 for Capri/Cortina 1.6–2.0 OHC) and various aftermarket suppliers.
Note: the Ford Capri 2.8i V6 and certain Sierra variants already use fuel injection (Bosch K-Jetronic or CFi). These require a different filter type.
Sierra Cosworth and Escort RS
For the Ford Sierra Cosworth (2.0 Turbo, YBB engine) and the Escort RS Cosworth (4WD turbo), sports air filters and replacement elements are available from K&N, Green Cotton and Pipercross. With a turbocharger fitted, filter quality is especially important — contaminated air increases the risk of turbo damage. Service interval: 20,000–30,000 km or annually.
Ford Fiesta MK1/MK2 and Escort MK3/MK4
These compact Fords from 1976–1990 use smaller OHV or CFi engines. Filter elements are compact in size. Note: the Fiesta 1.6 XR2 carb version has a different filter housing than the standard 1.1/1.3.
Service interval for classic Fords
Classic cars that see little use but are stored in damp conditions risk filter deterioration from moisture and mould. Change the air filter annually, even with low mileage. For show cars or rally use, shorten the interval accordingly.
