Control arm bushings for classic American cars — Pontiac, Chevrolet, Ford and more
The suspension of a classic American car is built tough but is not immune to time. The original rubber control arm bushings on a Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Corvette or Ford Mustang from the 1960s will be hardened and cracked after decades of use or storage. At Tomaxclassics, we stock MOOG and Energy Suspension control arm bushing kits for the most requested American classics — available directly in Europe.
We supply parts for:
• Pontiac GTO (1964–1971), LeMans (1964–1972), Tempest (1964–1970) — GM A-body platform
• Pontiac Firebird (1967–1969) and Grand Prix (1969–1972)
• Pontiac Ventura (1971–1974)
• Chevrolet Corvette (C2: 1963–1967, C3: 1968–1982)
• Chevrolet Camaro first generation (1967–1969) and second generation (1970–1981)
• Buick, Oldsmobile and GMC models on the GM A-body and B-body platform
• Ford Mustang (first generation: 1964½–1973)
• Dodge and Plymouth Mopar A-body and B-body models
GM A-body platform: broad interchangeability
An important advantage for owners of classic General Motors cars: the upper control arm bushings for the Pontiac GTO, LeMans, Tempest and Firebird are in many cases identical to those for other GM A-body models of the same era — Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevrolet. The MOOG K5196 (steel-clad rubber, press-in, upper control arm) fits six Pontiac models and the Chevrolet Corvette from a single part number. This broad coverage significantly increases the chance that the correct bushing is in stock.
MOOG: the leading brand for classic American suspension parts
MOOG has been the dominant aftermarket supplier for American steering and suspension parts for over a hundred years. Professional mechanics and NASCAR pit crews in the US use MOOG as their standard brand. In Europe, MOOG is less well known than in the US but the quality is identical — and the parts are available directly. MOOG supplies both steel-clad rubber (OE replacement) and Problem Solver® versions with enhanced construction for greater durability.
Rubber or polyurethane for your muscle car?
Rubber (MOOG style) delivers the original ride comfort and is quiet — ideal for a show car or comfortable daily driver. Polyurethane (Energy Suspension) is firmer and gives more feedback and precision under harder driving, but is noisier when dry and requires lubrication. For a restored GTO that is genuinely driven hard, polyurethane is a serious option worth considering.
A wheel alignment is always required after control arm bushing replacement.
