Brake drums for classic Toyota — Hilux, Land Cruiser, Corolla and more
Classic Toyota trucks and cars from the 1960s through to the late 1980s have earned a reputation for lasting reliability — and many of them are still actively driven today. Whether you're maintaining a Hilux RN-series, keeping a Land Cruiser FJ40 going, or working on a Corolla KE70 restoration, Tomaxclassics stocks rear brake drums for a growing range of classic Toyota models. We supply from Nipparts, Blueprint ADN and TRW — the brands restoration specialists trust for Japanese OEM-equivalent quality.
🔧 Drum brakes on classic Toyota: what you need to know Most classic Toyota models from the 1960s through the mid-1980s use rear drum brakes — and many use drums all round (Hilux first and second generation, Land Cruiser FJ40/BJ40). Brake drums are a wear item: they develop grooves and heat cracks over time and should be measured and replaced before they reach the minimum thickness stamped on the drum. When replacing, always do drums and shoes together for even braking. |
Models we supply
Toyota Hilux RN/LN series (1972–1988)
The Hilux is the most sought-after classic Toyota truck in Europe and internationally. Early Hilux generations — RN10, RN20, RN25, RN30 — use drum brakes all round; from the third generation (RN40/LN40) onwards, disc front and drum rear became standard. The most common replacement drum is the rear unit on the second-generation Hilux (RN25/RN30), which remains widely driven in restorations and as a working classic.
• Hilux 1st gen (RN10/RN20, 1972–1976): drums all round — front and rear
• Hilux 2nd gen (RN25/RN30, 1976–1983): drums all round
• Hilux 3rd gen (RN40/LN40, 1983–1988): disc front, drum rear
• Rear drum diameter: 254–270mm depending on load rating and variant
• Suppliers: Nipparts, Blueprint ADN, TRW
• Combine with rear brake shoes for a complete service — always replace as a set
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 / BJ40 (1960–1983) and FJ55 / FJ60 (1967–1987)
The Land Cruiser FJ40 is one of the most iconic off-road classics in the world — and one of the most actively restored. All FJ40 and BJ40 variants use drum brakes all round, with a large 304mm drum front and rear on most configurations. The FJ55 wagon shares the same running gear. The later FJ60 (1981–1987) transitioned to disc front on most variants, retaining drums at the rear.
• Land Cruiser FJ40 / BJ40 (1960–1983): drums all round — 304mm front and rear
• Land Cruiser FJ55 (1967–1980): drums all round, same configuration as FJ40
• Land Cruiser FJ60 (1981–1987): disc front, drum rear on most variants
• Suppliers: Nipparts, TRW
• FJ40 drum availability is limited — contact us to confirm stock for your chassis year
Toyota Corolla KE30 (1974–1979) and KE70 (1979–1987)
The Corolla KE30 and KE70 are the classic European Corolla generations with the strongest restoration community. Both use rear drum brakes (230–250mm) as standard; the front uses discs on most variants. The KE70 — produced until 1987 — is the most widely restored Corolla in the Benelux and Germany, with an active club scene.
• Corolla KE30 (1974–1979): rear drums 230mm standard
• Corolla KE70 (1979–1987): rear drums 230–250mm, most variants
• Suppliers: Nipparts, Blueprint ADN
• KE70 GT twin-cam: check brake spec — may differ from standard
Toyota Celica TA22 (1970–1977) and RA40 (1977–1981)
The first and second generation Celica — TA22 and RA40 — are increasingly sought-after Japanese classics. Both use rear drum brakes (230mm) with disc fronts. Spare parts for these models are difficult to source through mainstream channels; Tomaxclassics is building coverage specifically for the restoration community.
• Celica TA22 (1970–1977): rear drums 230mm
• Celica RA40 (1977–1981): rear drums 230mm
• Suppliers: Nipparts — OEM-equivalent quality
Toyota HiAce H10 / H20 (1967–1982)
The classic HiAce van and minibus from the H10 and H20 generations uses drum brakes all round. A reliable workhorse that has become a niche classic — particularly sought after in original condition or as a camper conversion base. Brake drum availability for these models is limited online.
• HiAce H10 (1967–1977) and H20 (1977–1982): drums all round
• Suppliers: Nipparts
