Steering parts for your classic Citroën

Citroën is known for its innovative steering concepts — from the simple rack and track rod steering of the 2CV to the fully hydraulic steering of the DS and CX. That diversity means steering parts for classic Citroëns are strongly model-specific. At Tomaxclassics, we stock tie rods, ball joints, rack gaiters and other steering parts for all popular classic Citroën models.

Our classic Citroën steering range includes:

Tie rods and ball joints:

• Tie rod assemblies (including outer ball joint) — front and rear

• Outer tie rod ends (ball joint at the end of the tie rod)

• Ball joints (control arm to steering knuckle) — upper and lower

• Ball joint repair kits — boot, clamp and lock nut for rebuild

• Tie rod end boots (protective gaiter over the ball joint)

Steering boxes and racks:

• Steering rack complete (rack-and-pinion for later classics; worm-and-sector for older models)

• Steering rack gaiters (dust covers for the rack)

• Power steering pump (hydraulic)

• Power steering lines and hoses

Anti-roll bars and links:

• Anti-roll bars (sway bars) complete

• Anti-roll bar drop links

• Anti-roll bar bushes

Other:

• Control arm bushes

• Steering dampers (on models fitted with a damper)

• Toe adjustment nuts and lock rings

We supply parts for:

• Citroën 2CV and Dyane — track rod steering; tie rods and ball joints are model-specific

• Citroën DS and ID — fully hydraulic steering; ball joints in two generations (pre-1965 and 1966+)

• Citroën GS and GSA — conventional rack-and-pinion with hydraulic assistance

• Citroën CX — hydraulic power steering via the central LHM system

• Citroën SM — hydraulic steering sharing the hydraulic system with the Maserati engine

• Citroën BX and AX — rack-and-pinion steering

• Citroën 11CV and 15CV (Traction Avant) — worm-and-sector steering with coupling

Hydraulic steering (DS, CX, SM): fundamentally different from a standard power steering rack

The steering on the Citroën DS, CX and SM uses the central LHM hydraulic system — the same high-pressure hydraulics that operate the suspension, brakes and clutch. The steering gear is not a self-contained unit with its own pump but an integral part of this system. Steering parts for the DS, CX and SM are therefore not interchangeable with those for models with conventional power steering, and replacement requires specific knowledge of the hydraulic system.

Citroën DS: ball joints in two generations

The Citroën DS received a modified ball joint design during its production run (1955–1975). The steering ball joint on the wheel side of a DS built before 1965 differs from that on a 1966 and later DS. Always check the build year of your DS before ordering ball joints or tie rod ends.

Citroën 2CV: track rod steering

The Citroën 2CV uses a track rod steering arrangement rather than a rack and pinion. The steering rod runs directly from the steering box to the wheels without an intermediate rack. Steering parts for the 2CV — tie rods, ball joints and track rod ends — are model-specific and not interchangeable with most other Citroën models.
