Control arm bushings for your classic car

Control arm bushings are the rubber or polyurethane connection points between the control arm and the chassis. They absorb shock, vibration and the forces that act on the suspension during acceleration and braking. On classic cars that have been stored for any length of time, the original rubber bushings are almost always hardened, cracked or loose — one of the most common suspension problems on any restoration project. At Tomaxclassics, we stock control arm bushing kits, complete control arms and sway bar bushings for all popular classic models.

Our control arms and bushings range includes:

Control arm bushings:

• Upper control arm bushing kit — upper front suspension position

• Lower control arm bushing kit — lower front suspension position

• Complete control arm bushing kits (front and rear combined)

• Individual bushings — for rebuilding one position

Control arms:

• Complete upper control arm — including ball joint and bushing

• Complete lower control arm — including ball joint and bushing

• Control arm bolt and hardware kit

Sway bar bushings:

• Sway bar bushing — the rubber mounting points for the anti-roll bar

• Sway bar end link

Materials and types:

• Rubber (OE replacement) — ride comfort, quiet, direct fit

• Polyurethane — firmer, better handling precision for performance use, requires lubrication

• Steel-clad rubber — reinforced rubber for higher load applications

Rubber or polyurethane: which should you choose?

When replacing control arm bushings, you have two material options. Rubber (OE replacement, such as MOOG steel-clad rubber kits) directly replaces the original bushings — soft ride comfort, no additional noise, fits straight in without lubrication. Polyurethane (such as Energy Suspension) is stiffer, gives better handling precision and lasts longer under performance use, but produces more noise when dry and requires regular lubrication with the supplied grease. For a comfortable daily driver or show car, rubber is the right choice; for a driven classic that also sees track days, polyurethane is a serious option.

When do control arm bushings need replacing?

The signs are clear: clunking or rattling from the front suspension over bumps, excessive inner tyre wear, a steering pull that returns after alignment, or visibly cracked and hardened rubber on inspection. Always replace bushings per axle — left and right at the same time — and always have the wheel alignment checked after replacement.

We supply control arm bushings and kits from MOOG and Energy Suspension for all popular classic car makes.
