Classic Volkswagens range from the air-cooled Beetle with its swing axle rear-wheel drive to the water-cooled Golf Mk1 and Scirocco with modern CV jointed front-wheel drive. Swing axle or CV jointed: the critical distinction for classic VW
This is the question classic VW owners ask most often when ordering drivetrain parts. The answer depends on the model and generation. The Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia and the T2 Transporter up to 1979 use a swing axle at the rear: the shaft pivots at the differential and has no CV joint. Replacement requires seal kits and axle bearings, not CV boot kits.
The water-cooled Volkswagens from 1974 onwards — Golf Mk1, Scirocco, Polo, Jetta and the T3 Transporter — use CV jointed drive shafts. Each shaft has an inner joint (at the gearbox) and an outer joint (at the wheel), each with its own boot. The inner boot kit is larger and contains more grease; the outer is more compact. Always specify which position you need: inner or outer, left or right.

Their boot kits — sold under the Löbro name for decades, a brand still widely referenced in classic VW forums and workshop manuals — are identical in quality to original VW parts.
