Air filter for your classic Nissan
Your classic Nissan deserves the same care as the day it left the factory — and the air filter is no exception. Whether you drive a Sunny from the eighties, a carburettor-era Bluebird or a fuel-injected Primera: a clean air filter protects the engine from dust, sand and fine particles that can damage cylinder walls.
Classic Nissans: carburettor vs. injection
Older Nissans — Sunny B11/B12, Bluebird U11/U12, Cherry N12, Violet/Stanza A10 — still use a carburettor. On these engines the air filter is typically housed in a round or oval filter box sitting directly on top of the carburettor. The filter elements are flat panel or round canister types; the exact size is determined by the filter housing or the OE number in the service manual.
Later models that switched to injection — Primera P10/P11, Almera N15, Micra K11 — use a rectangular panel filter. Popular aftermarket brands for this generation include Bosch, Mann-Filter and K&N.
K&N sports filter for the enthusiast
Owners of a Nissan 300ZX (Z31/Z32) or Silvia (S13/S14) sometimes choose a K&N replacement element or short-ram intake system. K&N filters are washable, reusable and offer slightly reduced airflow restriction — useful for a more spirited driving profile. Service interval: clean every 50,000 km, replace every 100,000 km.
Interval and maintenance
Classic cars often cover fewer kilometres per year but may sit idle for long periods. Dry dust and mould spores can degrade the filter medium. Replace the air filter at least once per calendar year, regardless of mileage. In dusty or wet conditions, shorten the interval accordingly.
